The Procedure of Admission in the University of Oxford

The procedure of admission into the University of Oxford is run by the individual colleges. Admission is based on the exams result, achieved and predicted ones, submitted written work by candidates, interviews between applicants and tutors, written admission tests before the interview. They also consider the personal statements and school references. Prospective students have to come through UCAS application system – Universities and colleges Admissions Services.

As a rule, one does not have a right to try to be admitted into Cambridge University and Oxford University at one and the same because of the great amount of people who want to become students of these two universities. The competition is really great. However, there is an exception for the applicants for Organ Scholarship and for those who are aiming for the second undergraduate degree.

When filing in the admission form, both graduates and undergraduates are free to write the preferable college within the walls of the University of Oxford, however, there is no 100 percent guarantee that he or she will be admitted at that very college he or she wants to. He or she may be offered some other college.

One has many opportunities to get some financial aids during the study in the Oxford University. This is one of the distinctive features of the University of Oxford.

Colleges of the University of Oxford

While speaking about the University of Oxford it is just impossible but mention the colleges of the University of Oxford, as the amount of them is just impressively great.

Therefore, the University of Oxford numbers 38 Colleges and 7 religious Permanent Private Halls (PPHs). PPHs are considered to be autonomous self-governing corporations within the structure of the University of Oxford.

A typical college consists of senior, middle, and junior common rooms, college bar, hall for dining, chapel, library, lodgings for the dons, and rooms for undergraduates. If speaking about the architecture of the colleges, one should mention that it is possible to find buildings of the medieval architecture as well as the modern buildings.

Degrees of University of Oxford

While speaking about the University of Oxford, one can do nothing but mention the degrees, which the University of Oxford provides. So, let us start with the degree of Bachelor. The degree of Bachelor, it is considered to be undergraduate degree and mainly is divided into two following degrees – Bachelor of Arts (B.A) and Bachelor of Fine Art (B.F.A). Such Bachelors degrees are awarded to the students after three of four years of the study. Only in 1978, the students have received the opportunity to receive B.F.A. History of the University of Oxford

Many people are speaking about the Oxford University, about its privileges and advantages, many people are dreaming to become students however only few people know the history of the university. Therefore, in this article I would like to tell you the story of such a famous educational institution.

Till the 12 century Oxford was already famous for being a center of education. People who were engaged with the educational process in Oxford are dated to deliver in 1096. Being expelled from the University of Paris in 1167 and settled in Oxford. That brought to the great reforms and changes in the education.

Now, University if Oxford is a collegiate university and it may be difficult to get used to it. This university is considered to be a federation. It has great number of independent colleges and halls. The central administration is headed by the Vice-Chancellor. However, the main person in the whole federation is the Chancellor, now Lord Pattern. Nevertheless, all the duties about the educational process, abut the research work and all the other main things in the university are laying n the Vice-Chancellor. He is the factual governor.

It is very prestige to be  a student of the Oxford University, that is why the enrolling conditions are very strict.

At Oxford you also may visit various museums. Some of them are the Ashmoleon which has big collection of artifacts from ancient time till the renaissance and the Museum of Oxford which shows the whole history of the city.

Link between USA and Britain

There are 39 colleges in the Oxford University. Because of great demand on American culture and history and great amount of American students the Oxford University administration established Oxford Institute for American Studies. This educational institution studies, researches and teaches the American culture, history, politics and government. The director of this institute is Mr. Howe, professor of American history.

There are many talented and experienced teachers in the university, who came usually from US. One of the most experienced teachers is John Elliott, a professor of modern history. He came from Princeton, where he taught in the Institute for Advanced Study. Nowadays he has an aim to tell the students in Britain as much as possible about American History. He confirms that snobbery and antipathy towards the US are widespread among the people because of reputation of the USA in the world as dominant power. If it will change, the attitude of people will change as well.

Moreover, he says, that as Oxford is one of the oldest and famous educational institutions in English speaking world and because of it this University can become the best link between Europe countries and USA. He does not mean the aim is to create special Anglo-American relations, but he confirms that a link between Europe and America is necessary. In fact Britain and USA have much in common and they have similar aims, so they have to collaborate. Besides, Oxford university influence on other universities of Europe, as it has good reputation in academic world and many educational institutions become interested in the relations with US. As a result, 38 educational institutions in Europe offer undergraduate degree programs in American Studies and 13 universities provide postgraduate degree programs. Nowadays Oxford university have about 10 000 of American Alumni, including former president of the USA Clinton.
